D&D 5e Ranger Class Revision

This document shares the product of one gaming group’s effort to fix the iconic Ranger class in 5e. The goal is to make the Ranger more desirable to play but still balanced with the other classes.

Using the System Reference Document 5.0, this revision maintains the original structure of the class while making no more alterations than necessary to make every feature desirable and distinct, yet consistent in tone and comparable with the other classes.

• "Favored Enemy" is upgraded from "ribbon" to a "power budget" feature with combat value
• "Natural Explorer" has improved utility and wider applicability
• "Primeval Awareness" is de-coupled from spellcasting and has improved utility
• "Hide in Plain Sight" has greatly improved usability and utility in line with comparable rogue features
• "Foe Slayer" has wide applicability
• Hunter archetype features are slightly revised to make them clearer and better balanced choices
• Beast Master archetype is heavily revised to allow the beast companion to grow and improve with the ranger over time and to operate more reasonably yet autonomously
