Like the first flowers after a harsh spring, the arrival of the Revised Ranger in Wizards of the Coast's Unearthed Arcana column brings with it a new sense of hope and optimism. The changes to the Revised Ranger have been, with a few exceptions, almost universally well-recieved, and the general consensus amoungst D&D players is that this new ranger class, although as rough and unrefined as the characters it represents, marks a significant improvement over the ranger presented in the Player's Handbook.
With the Revised Ranger also comes new opportunities, particularly for those who have long desired to play a ranger who survives using skill and cunning rather than magic spells.
Expand Your Choices!
The Wild Souls optional mechanic for the Revised Ranger offers players a choice at 2nd level: do they take what many see as the more traditional route, and use druidic magic to enhance their combat abilities? Or do they deviate from the norm and fall back on their own knowledge, skill, and grit to survive - and thrive - in their role as a warden of civilisation and wilderness alike?
Easy Integration into Multiple Settings!
Dungeon Masters interested in running low- and no-magic games may well find use the Wild Souls expansion, as it provides a mechanical alternative to the Spellcasting feature without altering any other aspects of the Revised Ranger class. It thus requires almost no work on the part of the Dungeon Master to implement into their chosen setting - and fanns of the classic spellcasting ranger won't need to compromise what they enjoy.
Emulate Classic Ranger Characters!
With the options provided by Wild Souls, classic ranger characters like Drizzt Do'Urden and Aragorn Elessar can finally be fully realised at the tabletop using the same class these figures first inspired.
